A Letter to the Community
Dear Campus Community,
I am pleased to announce that a national search has begun to select Colorado College’s next vice president for advancement with the formation of a search committee and the selection of a search consultant. Finding the next leader for our advancement division is one of my top priorities, and I am convinced that, given our strengths and opportunities, this position will be very attractive.
I will chair the search committee, and am thankful to the following people who have agreed to assist the college in this important endeavor:
Megan Anderson (assistant professor of geology); Salvatore Bizzarro (professor of Romance languages); Stacy Davidson (college controller and director of investments); Bob Lee (professor of political science); Ken Ralph (director of athletics); Roger Smith, (director of the office of minority and international students); John Simons (professor of English); Adam Press (trustee), and Amy Louis (trustee). Jermyn Davis, chief of staff, president’s office, will staff the committee.
Susan VanGilder, principal, Storbeck and Pimentel, will serve as the search consultant who will help us identify and recruit the most talented candidates. This position is critical to the college’s future; therefore, we must have candidates who are bold and creative, but who also appreciate the values of Colorado College.
Last week, the search committee, cabinet, and representatives from the advancement division met with our consultant to begin discussing the ideals and characteristics we hope to find in the next vice president for advancement. Future status updates about the search for our next vice president for advancement will be posted to a dedicated website, http://www.coloradocollege.edu/offices/presidentsoffice/vp-advancement. In the coming weeks, I will share the position description we will use for this selection. The attached ad has been placed to begin building the pool as we more specifically define the position description.
While I hope to have the next vice president in place by August 1, 2012, the top priority is hiring the best person for this position. Therefore, the search will continue until we meet that goal. Again, I look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

On Monday, January 30, Steve Elder informed me that he will be stepping down from his role as vice president for advancement. Beginning February 20, Steve will focus on preparing the advancement division for the transition and will serve as senior philanthropic advisor, assisting me on special philanthropic initiatives until July 31, 2012. Beyond CC, Steve will begin making his expertise available to other organizations by consulting in partnership with The Suddes Group/For Impact.
Steve has served the college since November 1998, first as director of development, then as associate vice president for development, until he was appointed vice president in 2004. Instrumental in two major campaigns, he has overseen a program that has received more than $300 million in generous cash and commitments during his tenure. He has been key in funding historic building projects such as the Russell T. Tutt Science Center, the Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center, the enhancements to the Van Briggle building and Children's Center, as well as the El Pomar Sports Complex, which is currently under way. Steve provided leadership to the college’s completion of the Priddy Challenge and to securing the $10 million Walton Family Foundation matching grant for deep-need scholarships. He was also instrumental in creating and building the President’s Circle and the 1874 Society.
Steve told me that when he arrived at Colorado College he never expected to stay as long as he did, but he fell in love with CC and the wonderful endeavor of advancing its mission. I honor his decision and am grateful for his service.
Within the next few weeks, I will announce a process for identifying our next vice president for advancement, who I hope will begin service on August 1, 2012. In the meantime, I am grateful to Professor Tim Fuller for agreeing to serve as interim vice president for advancement. Tim brings extensive experience as not only an esteemed faculty member, but also for serving as dean of the faculty and college from 1992 to 1999; as acting president from August 2001 to January 2002; as a charter member of the Campaign Executive Committee under former President Kathryn Mohrman; and as a member of the Faculty Advancement Advisory Committee. I hope there will be other opportunities for faculty members to help serve in the college’s leadership.
