Alternative Autobiography

Printable PDF Version

This exercise in two parts explore the subject of randomness in the creative process.

  1. In five minutes, write your autobiography.
  1. Now, set that piece aside – we will return to it in another step! The next exercise is to write a list of 20 words you love as words—words with textures or sounds that you like.  Take a few minutes to do this – and don’t think too hard about it! Go with your gut.
  1. Now, you have 5 minutes to write an autobiography again—and you need to incorporate all 20 of the words on your list. You can do it!
  1. Now, read both of your autobiographies, and think about their similarities and differences. Think about how the process of writing each differed.
