The first speaker in the Art Department's Design Week is an architect whose talk is entitled "The 4th Generation Library:"

The talk is on March 4th at 12:15 in Tutt Library 238. Lunch will be provided.

Lamis will explore how library design can strengthen community-building, learning, sustainability, and access to scholarship. According to an article in The Catalyst (March 1, 2019) by Ellen Youks, he will also look specifically at "the design of Tutt Library and the ways in which the library's design uniquely fosters a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere....and replenishes community resources." In the same article, Ysa Trujillo ('19), an Integrative Design and Architecture major who has worked in Tutt Library since her first year at CC, explains how this perspective aligns with her own approach design which is rooted in the perspective of feminist theory and systemic inequality. Noting her appreciation for the role they play in equalizing societies, Trujillo explains that, "Libraries are unique places where community and learning intersect."

An authority on library design, Mr. Lamis has been invited to speak across the country on the evolving role of information technology in libraries. He contributed a chapter on sustainable design in libraries to the book Planning the Modern Public Library Building (Westport, Connecticut: Libraries Unlimited, 2003) and the article "Evolving Spaces: An Architect's Perspective on Libraries" in Volume 28 of Advances in Librarianship (Oxford, England: Elsevier, 2004). He is a co-author of Designs for Learning: College and University Buildings by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (New York: Monacelli, 2016).
