Robin Walter '12 Publishes 'Vanishing Prairie' Article

Colorado College alumna Robin Walter '12, co-founder and executive director of Rediscover the Prairie, has published "A Horseback Account of America's Vanishing Prairie" on the Huffington Post's Green blog.

Walter and Sebastian Tsocanos '12 spent three months traveling through the Great Plains by horseback, documenting the massive transformation the Great Plains have undergone in the last century. Writes Walter, "The mixed-grass biome we rode across has shrunk to 29 percent of its historical distribution. Estimates of remaining tall-grass prairie dip to fractions of 1 percent. Loss and fragmentation of habitat, mostly for agricultural purposes, has devastated grassland species."

Walter and Tsocanos will discuss the roles ranching, farming, and wildlife conservation play in protecting the prairie heritage during a State of the Rockies presentation titled "Rediscover the Prairie: A Journey through North America's Imperiled Grasslands" at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 23 in Gates Common Room. The talk is part of CC's State of the Rockies Speakers Series.
