Reed sculpture wins top Art on the Streets honor

Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs awarded its top prize in the ninth annual Art on the Streets competition to CC Professor of Art Carl Reed, for his piece "Braced Ring with Outlyer," which is on display outside Plaza of the Rockies, on South Tejon Street just south of Colorado Avenue. This year's competition, featuring modern works, drew from a wide pool of artists and offered the greatest amount of prize money yet: Reed was awarded $15,000. The sculpture will remain on display for a year. In late July, Reed's Shoshone Font, a red and buff sandstone piece encompassing the Shoshone Spring in nearby Manitou Springs, was dedicated. The font was blessed by an elder of the Southern Ute tribe, for whom the effervescent springs are sacred. Photos by Dave Wolverton.
