Professor Hautzinger Looks at Veterans Day in LA Times Op-ed

An op-ed piece co-authored by Colorado College Anthropology Professor Sarah Hautzinger, titled "In honor of Veterans Day, let's deal with the real costs of war," has been published in the Sunday, Nov. 9 issue of the Los Angeles Times.

Hautzinger is the co-author of "Beyond Post-Traumatic Stress: Homefront Struggles with the Wars on Terror," published in December 2013, with Jean Scandlyn, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Colorado in Denver. Both Hautzinger and Scandlyn are researchers for the Costs of War Project at Brown University and co-authors of the Los Angeles Times op-ed.

The article notes that "Today's all-volunteer military force means that many Americans have little or no close contact with those who have fought in the post-9/11 wars. This makes it difficult for the vast majority of civilians to understand the experiences of returning soldiers and to engage in often-difficult conversations about the costs of war. But these conversations are essential if veterans are to reengage in civilian life and heal not only from the physical, but the moral and spiritual injuries of war."
