Matt Philippi '09 Takes First Place in Half-Pipe Event in Switzerland

Matt Philippi '09 took first place at the men's half-pipe event at the Orage European Free-Ski Open in Laax, Switzerland recently, competing against top international skiers. The Orage Euro Open is Europe's premier free-ski event of the season, drawing names and talent from around the world.
Philippi also won the World Skiing Invitational's Superhit Award and the World Skiing Invitational's Orage Masters as part of Team Vokhl earlier this month. The Superhit is the grand finale of the super-pipe, giving skiers a one-chance, no-holds barred opportunity outside of the super-pipe final places, in which Philippi took sixth. The Orage Masters also is known as the "Anti-Comp," with eight teams competing against and judging each other. The World Skiing Invitational took place April 18-21 at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler, B.C., Canada.
Philippi, a history major, grew up in Charlestown, Mass., and has been competing since he was 12.
