This year 522 first-year students, as well as 31 transfer and eight international exchange students, will participate in the 10th annual Priddy Experience, part of Colorado College’s New Student Orientation.
CC’s New Student Orientation is unique in that it provides the opportunity for new students to participate in a five-day off-campus experience. This year, students will take part in one of 64 trips – 18 to the backcountry and 46 to urban and “front country” sites – in which they fan out across the Southwest working on community service projects. Students depart from campus on Wednesday, Aug. 29 and return Sunday, Sept. 2. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 3, immediately following Opening Convocation.
The community service component of the Priddy Experience trips provides an excellent bonding opportunity for new students, and underscores CC’s strong service ethic. More than 80 percent of CC students participate in community service projects in the course of their college career.
Among the front country and urban sites students will work at are the Explora Science Center in Albuquerque, N.M.; the Tapetes de Lana, a vocational training program in Northern New Mexico; La Puente in Colorado’s San Luis Valley; DAWGS, an animal sanctuary in Dalhart, Texas; and the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, N.M. Backcountry opportunities include working with the Colorado Fourteener’s Initiative, Rocky Mountain Field Institute, and Coalition for the Upper South Platte, among others.
This is the 10th year CC has undertaken the massive project. During the summer months, five student interns worked under the direction of Elizabeth Pudder, assistant director of outdoor education and orientation, on all aspects of organizing the trips, including coordinating paperwork, compiling incoming student information, contacting work sites, and setting up and breaking down more than 300 tents that will be used on the trips.
