Colorado College’s women lacrosse team withstood a late comeback by Sewanee to record a 10-9 victory in the championship game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. With the win, CC swept the season series and avenged last year's loss to Sewanee in the championship game.
Back-to-back goals by attacker Elise Burchard ’14 gave CC a four-goal lead with 8:40 remaining. The top-seeded Tigers appeared to be in complete control after attacker Ellie Cole '13 struck for three consecutive goals, the last of which put the team ahead by an 8-3 count with 16:47 remaining.
Less than two minutes later, host team Sewanee ignited a three-goal outburst that allowed them to trim their deficit to 8-6. The surge included two goals just 10 seconds apart.
Burchard slowed Sewanee's momentum with what proved to be the first game-winning goal of her career, but Sewanee quickly struck again cutting CC's lead to 10-8 with less than 5 minutes to play, then scored again with one second remaining.
CC goaltender Abby Fink ’13 made two of her eight saves during the final five minutes. Fink also denied Sewanee on two of its eight free-position shots.
“The defense played great. They did what they needed to do. They were not going to lose that game,” said CC head coach Susan Stuart. Read more: http://www.cctigers.com/news/2012/4/29/WLAX_0429121744.aspx
