CC wins city's top horticultural award

Colorado College has again won top honors in the City of Colorado Springs' "Springs in Bloom' competition. CC's two 1,100-square-feet flower beds, located in the Cascade Avenue median between Uintah and Cache La Poudre streets, received the 2008 Best Overall Bed award. The lush, colorful beds are planted with a variety of petunias, marigolds, cosmos, rudbeckia, canna lilies and ornamental plants, said Cecelia Gonzales, CC horticulturalist, and Kyle Larsen, assistant horticulturalist.

Colorado Springs began the program in 2004, with individuals, families, clubs and businesses "adopting" flower beds throughout the city. CC was a finalist for a Golden Trowel Award the first year, then won it in 2005 and 2006. Last year the city inaugurated the Best Overall Bed award, which was won by CC, making this the fourth consecutive year CC has won top honors in the competition.
