CC Professor Mark Smith Awarded Fulbright European Union Fellowship

CC Economics and Business Professor Mark Smith has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He will conduct research on the Emissions Trading System at the European Commission in 2009-10 within the framework of the Fulbright-Schuman Program with a project entitled "Allocate or Auction? Lessons for the United States from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction." The particular focus of his studies will be the auctioning of EU allowances under Phase II and Phase III of the EU-ETS. Smith will be based primarily in Brussels at the Environmental Directorate of the European Commission, but also will travel to Britain, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The program operates in more than 155 countries with the goal of bringing different ideas and people together to promote cross-cultural collaboration.
