Business & Community Alliance “Adopts” the CC Community Kitchen

On November 1, the board of the CC Business & Community Alliance (B&CA) voted to "adopt" the CC Community Kitchen for the 2011-12 academic year. The B&CA is a group of local business and non-profit leaders who volunteer to serve as informal ambassadors for the college and promote positive town-gown relations. Five student service organizations presented their work and outlined their missions, needs, and expected outcomes. The CC Community Kitchen, led by senior Colin McCarey and eight student managers through the college's Center for Service and Learning, with longtime advisor Gay Victoria, was chosen by the board as the student initiative the B&CA will officially support. The B&CA will donate all proceeds from the events the group hosts throughout the year to the Kitchen, and will invite student leaders to speak about the Kitchen at its functions. According to Jenifer Furda, B&CA Board Chair, the meeting dedicated to spending time with student volunteers and learning about their efforts is a major highlight for the local board: "It's exciting, getting to know these students and learning about their projects. If we're here to advance town-gown relations, then supporting CC students in their community engagement is what it's all about." This is the second year the B&CA has "adopted" a student-led outreach program; in 2010 the CC Student Garden was selected.

The students who work in the Community Kitchen have served a hot nutritious meal for the needy and homeless in the community at Shove Chapel every Sunday afternoon, including holidays and school breaks, since 1992. The CC Community Kitchen has been selected by the Colorado Springs Independent as one of 29 local non-profits and programs featured in the 2011 GIVE! Campaign. Volunteers are always welcome; no advance registration is required. For more information about the Community Kitchen and how to volunteer, please visit https://www.coloradocollege.edu/offices/cce/
