Andrew Abeyta ’09 Wins Award for Research with Professor Chan

Andrew Abeyta '09 won an undergraduate research award for work presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology's national conference in Tampa, Fla. Abeyta, a psychology major, presented his collaborative research on stereotypes with Emily Chan, assistant professor of psychology, at the conference on Feb. 5-7.

Their project, "Stereotype Threat for Low-Income Parents: Impact on Parenting Style," found that the anxiety that one's behavior might confirm the negative stereotype associated with being a low-income parent could in itself lead to less desirable parenting styles. Their work adds to Chan's previous research on the threat of stereotyping on financial literacy, which has important implications for programs targeted at low-income clients.
