Colorado College Events Colorado College Events Kabuki Play: "The Medicine Peddler" Tue, 14 Oct 2014 09:29:39 MDT <p><em>Monday, February 10, 2014 1:00 PM</em></p><p>Under the direction of Visiting Professor Laurence Kominz, CC students will perform the play, &ldquo;The Medicine Peddler,&rdquo; in which a heroic samurai disguises himself as a medicine peddler in order to infiltrate a New Year's party held by the powerful warlord who murdered the hero's father when he was a little boy.&nbsp;Of course, the hero is bent on revenge. On the way, he encounters beautiful courtesans, a princess, an athletic buffoon, and the villain's soldiers.&nbsp;And the hero has to protect his false identity by imitating the medicine peddler's tongue-twisting sales pitch. During the last 25 years, he has been involved in in-depth research of New Mexico santeros.&nbsp; His research and interest has led him to study both old and contemporary santeros from New Mexico and around the world.&nbsp; Along with his study of artists and their history, Goler has immersed himself in the study of the history of saints and their iconography. Goler is a santero and conservator whose work preserves and extends traditional devotional art practices. Devaka Premawardhana is currently Riley Scholar-in-Residence in the Colorado College Department of Religion.&nbsp;He is an anthropologist of religion who studies the various expressions of Christianity in the Global South.
