'33 Don Haney was selected by the board of directors of The Agencies of Martin Luther Home Society, Inc., as their 1997 Person of the Year. This national recognition is given to those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of developmental disabilities and to the ministry of Martin Luther Homes. Don was recognized at the Society's annual luncheon meeting in June.

 

'36 Edith Gaylord Harper received an honorary doctoral degree of humane letters from the University of Oklahoma at its commencement ceremonies in May.

 

'38 Pauline Anderson Mosier is sad to report the death of her husband, Robert. She lives in San Jacinto, Calif.

 

'40 Barbara White Jones and husband, Dewitt, recently celebrated their 54th anniversary. They live in a retirement community in Lacey, Wash. Prior to this, they lived on Captiva Island, Fla., for 18 years and in Glen Arbor, Mich., for six years. Their son Dewitt, III, is a photographer and lecturer, and has a column in Outdoor Photographer. Son Terry is president of Sabre Interactive, a computer company.

 

'42 Albert Balows received the 1997 American Board of Medical Microbiology Professional Recognition Award, sponsored by Pfizer, Inc. Albert has had a long and distinguished career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Ga.

 

'43 Louis Johnson is retired and divides his time between Colorado Springs and Las Vegas.

 

'46 Martin Merritt is retired from F.W. Woolworth, where he was a vice president and director general of Woolworth of Mexico. He has four children and seven grandchildren. His wife, Sally Ketring Merritt '46, is deceased.

 

'47 Eric Bransby received an honorary doctoral degree of humane letters from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs at its commencement ceremonies in May.

 

'48 Rodney Cobb is retired and living in Sacramento, Calif. * The Colorado Broadcasters Association announced the creation of The Harry W. Hoth Public Service Award in honor of Harry Hoth, CEO of Pikes Peak Broadcasting. It was created to recognize Harry's 50 years of service to Colorado broadcasting and service to Colorado communities. It will be awarded annually to a broadcaster who exemplifies Harry's dedication and performance to community service.

 

'50 Suzanne Anderson lives in her Four Winds motor home and spends her time traveling the world and visiting her 19 grandchildren. She retired from her position as a Montessori directress. * After 30 years of professional librarianship at Yale University and two graduate schools of theology in Washington, D.C., Ward Gongoll is now retired and would like to hear from former classmates and fraternity brothers at 2400 Queens Chapel Road, #1102, Hyattsville, MD 20782.

 

'51 Persis Ayer Eberhart and Ed Dworak had a surprise meeting in Ft. Collins in March at a Red Cross benefit where Persis' husband, Cy, performed his one-man show "Will Rogers, Live!" Cy and Ed's wife, Ann, attended high school together in Central Kansas and hadn't seen each other in 50 years. Persis and Cy live in Salem, Ore., where Persis has retired from a 15-year stint as committee administrator for the Oregon Bankers Association.

 

'53 Barbara Stock Bradley received the 24th annual Silver Bell Award given by the Assistance League of Colorado Springs for outstanding volunteer service. Barbara has contributed over 7,500 hours of service to the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. In addition, she has volunteered with the American Red Cross, the Fine Arts Center, the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and the Junior League. * Thomas J. Gross and his wife, Martha, cruised the intercoastal waterway from Baltimore, Md. to Key West, Fla., last winter. While docked in Fort Pierce, Fla., they noticed a sailboat with a Colorado Springs hailing port, "A very rare sighting." As Thomas asked the people aboard if they were from Colorado Springs, the captain introduced himself as Dick Pfeiffer '50, brother to Sue Pfeiffer Daniels '55, a classmate of Thomas'. "It's a small world when you can meet someone from your own small college in the Rockies on boats headed in opposite directions in the deep south."

 

'54 Charles MacNab is a principal organizer and secretary/treasurer of the Clan MacNab Society, Inc., a worldwide Scottish clan organization with a Website containing Scottish history and MacNab lore. The site address is: www.macnab.org. * Nanda Ward retired in mid-May and reported to the alumni office five days later that she is "thoroughly enjoying retirement thus far."

 

'55 Janneli Charters Dart can be reached via e-mail at Janneli@indra.com. * Norma Taylor was elected governor for Rotary International District 5510 for the 1997-98 year. She is the first woman to hold this position in Arizona and one of only 15 women worldwide holding such positions.

 

'56 Robert Albee dropped by the alumni office in July en route to Frisco, Colo., for a family reunion. He also visited with Bob Ligler '57, who lives in Colorado Springs. Robert and his wife, Sharon, spend their summers in Park City, Minn. * Mary Vandergrift Ashford, a retired social worker, lives in Westminster, Colo. * Janet Colley Middleton is sad to report the death of her husband, Willis, in February 1996. She retired after 10 years as a speech-language pathologist in Sandpoint, Idaho, and moved to San Luis Obispo, Calif., where her two sons live.

 

'57 Julia Livingston Hodson and Jean Boncutter Rolfe were both honored by the University of Washington as two of their outstanding volunteers of the year. Julia was honored for her 37 years serving the Foundation for International Understanding through Students. Jean was honored for volunteering 11 years as a surgery liaison at the UW Medical Center, serving as an officer to the Service League, as well as serving on the visiting committee for the University of Washington and the board of Fred Hutchinson. Jean also received the prestigious Bullitt Award for volunteer service to the community.

 

'58 Larry Boyce is manager of Battery World in Vista, Calif. * Ronald Laughlin is manager of quality loss and control for Mullen Transportation, Inc., in Aldersyde, Alberta. * Marjorie Hammon Marion retired after 29 years at the College of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill. She spent 19 years on faculty in the English department, four years as director of continuing education and five years as dean of the faculty. * Lawrence and Lois Brown Oswalt live in Wichita, Kan., where Lawrence is administrative coordinator for Envision, working as the assistant to the director of rehabilitation. He asks, "Anybody know any easy ways to learn braille and sign language?" * Buck Reinking is president of Iowa Prestressed Concrete, Inc. He and wife, Patricia, enjoy watching Scot Owens '79 (former assistant hockey coach for CC) coach the Des Moines Bucs hockey team. * Charles Ridge and his wife, Courtney, enjoyed a three-month sabbatical, which included a "Benedictine experience" in Harmony, Ind., a daughter's graduation from Mills College in Oakland, Calif., and six weeks in Europe in Waterloo, Belgium. Serious study of piano and Tai Chi are recent additions to Charles' life.

'59 Robin Reid lives in San Diego, where he has his own consulting practice working with public and private organizations to help them manage change and be more humanistic. He was elected to the Organization Development Network Board of Trustees for a four-year term.

'62 Chuck Hudson and his family stopped by the CC campus this summer for a tour. Chuck is a minutiae consultant in Virginia Beach - in other words, retired. * Jerry Osborne is senior director for clinical operations and project management for Knoll Pharmaceutical Company in Parsippany, N.J. * Robert Price lives with his wife, Rubemele, in Daly City, Calif., where he is a realtor with Mason McDuffy.

 

'63 Tedi Muzzy Cox is the executive director of CASA in Ft. Collins, Colo. She also has been chairperson of the Ft. Collins Arts Council and has served on the symphony guild board. * L.E. McCarthy climbed Pikes Peak in September '95 to celebrate his son's 50th birthday and again in August '96 to celebrate his 75th! L.E. was in his 40s while at CC. He lives in Camarillo, Calif. * Lani Markisen Miller is administrator of a 550-member chapter of the American Sewing Guild. She and husband, Lew, have been Elderhosteling, taking a trip every other month. They are also busy with Habitat for Humanity. * Alice Parsons Petrich lives at 30217 33rd Ave. SW, Federal Way, WA 98023 * William Powell is superintendent of the Strasburg School District in Colorado. His wife, Kathie, teaches English in Bennett. William, Kathie and their three-year-old son, John, enjoy white water rafting, fishing and hiking. * Joan Seelig McCarty operates a family business, Harrison Boat Storage and Repair, Inc., on Lake Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. She has three grandsons: Jake, Josh and Joe. * Jacques Rivard has been retired since 1995 and lives in Val David, Quebec. "For the last two years, I have spent my time skiing at Mt. Tremblant in the winter and golfing at the Royal Laurentian in the summer. Last January, I participated in the FISU Winter Games in Muju, South Korea, as a technical advisor for the Canadian Universities ski team. By the way, retirement is great. La joie de vivre!" * Karen Hedblom Romine is an instructor at the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, Tenn. * Nancy Cox Santamaria is still working as an accountant, but only half-days. In addition, she is an exercise instructor for seniors in her community. Her oldest son, Jason, is an officer in the Marines and younger son, Eric, will graduate in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University. Her husband, Joe, is an architect. * Jim and Ann Armstrong Scarboro report their daughter, Elizabeth, lives in Oakland, Calif.; daughter, Catherine in New York City; son, John, graduated from Carleton College; and daughter, Jean, is a junior at Hampshire College. Jim is an attorney with Arnold and Porter in Denver, and Ann teaches English literature and French at Montbello High School in Denver. * Fred Singleton retired as a high school principal in 1993 and now works part-time as field director for the Illinois Principals Association. He organizes workshops, gives legal advice and acts as liaison with the Illinois State Board of Education. He lives in Highland, Ill. * Russell Sperry lives in Oak View, Calif., where he is a senior information systems analyst for Ventura County. * Bill Stafford is the executive director for the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle. Recent missions he made for the Trade Alliance were to India, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland and Uzebekistan. This fall he goes to South America. He was also appointed to the National Advisory Council of the U.S. Small Business Administration. His daughter, Ariana, entered CC in the fall.

'66 Susan Davis Allen, vice president for research at Florida State University, was elected to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Board of Directors. ORAU manages and operates the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy. * Paul Connor and John Dunn recently discovered that their daughters, Whitney and Laura, respectively, are roommates in Cambridge, Mass., and had been competing against one another in sailing since they were in prep school. '69 James Bailey and wife, Yurika, live in Mercer Island, Wash., with their two children. * Rich Forrest still chases gold mines in North and South America, but has found a new niche. He raises elk and packages very unique elk investments. "Never did practice law, but hope to write a computer program that will help do-it-yourself 'lawyers.'" * Penny Norton Whitney was a finalist for the 24th annual Silver Bell Award given by the Assistance League of Colorado Springs. Penny is a member of the Children's Literacy Center board and member of CC's Business and Community Alliance. She serves on the Red Cross board and the School District 11 Accountability Committee.

 

'70 James Gamble had a paper accepted for the September issue of the Atlantic Economic Journal, which proves that the leading definitions of economic and decision theory rationality are invalid. At the Telluride Mountain Film Festival, Steve was awarded the "Sharp End Award" by the Access Fund (a climber's advocacy group for which Steve serves as Western Colorado Coordinator) for his work in opening a public recreational easement for ice-climbing on Bridal Veil Falls. In addition, Steve completed two first ascents of desert big wall climbing routes, including one with Robert Warren '83, in Red Rocks, Las Vegas. * Patti Freudenburg Margrave was appointed to the Trails Open Space and Parks (TOPS) working committee in Colorado Springs. The committee will work in an advisory capacity to recommend which parcels of land should be acquired for open space or developed into trails and parks. Ann Oatman-Gardner '80 was also appointed to this committee. * Ken Salazar, former chief legal counsel for Colorado Governor Roy Romer announced he will run for state attorney general in 1998. * Dan Thorndike was appointed by Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber to the state's Water Resources Commission for a four-year term. Her military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal and Three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. * Rick Byrd stopped by the alumni office in July to report that he and wife, Ann Rudolph Byrd '80, had moved to a new home in Highlands Ranch, Colo. '81 A biology teacher and department chair at Camp Verde High School in Sedona, Ariz., John Banister-Marx was honored as the Arizona Science Teacher of the Year by the National Science Teachers Association's Arizona affiliate. He is a curriculum specialist in the areas of evolution and the nature of science. * Jolina Ward Borah, husband, Brian, and sons, Sean and Shane, visited John Banister-Marx and his wife, Cathleen, in Sedona, Ariz. They also spent a day with Sam Downing and family in Prescott, Ariz. Jolina and family live in Colorado Springs, where she is a communication specialist at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. * Stephen Dinkowitz and Deborah Marriner were married April 26.
