’42 Donald Heizer was inducted into CC’s Athletics Hall of Fame at a ceremony in January. Donald was a running back on the Tigers’ championship football teams of the late 1930s and early 1940s.

 

’43 Robert Rouse is retired and living in Oceanside, Calif., with his new wife, Dorothy.

’53 Don Manzelli serves on the Designer Selection Panel and the Technical Services Committee for the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, Boston’s new, soon-to-be-built $600 million convention center. * Barbara Ramsey Pierson is retired and living in Punta Gorda, Fla.

 

’55 Van Skilling retired as chairman and CEO of Experian North America. He will remain on the Experian Global Board and will continue to chair the company’s Consumer Advisory Council.

 

’56 Al Johnson, professor emeritus of economics at CC, and director of the debate and forensics program at CC for 42 years, retired at the end of the 1998 school year. Although retired, Al assisted his replacement, Julie Stapleton, in her first year of running the Colorado College Forensic Tournament, one of the largest held in the U.S. Sixteen former student-debaters returned to participate, representing classes from 1975 through 1997. A roast for Al was also held, attracting many friends and former colleagues. * Helen Adams Tucker, retired and living in San Rafael, Calif., has four children and five grandchildren. She raises border collies and works sheep with them, "much like the movie Babe."

’58 Sallie Richardson Haugh lives in Paradise Valley, Ariz., with her husband Louis. * Gib and Joan Barrett Hazard live in Colorado Springs, where Gib is an account representative with Unified Title Co., Inc. * Dorothy Duell Henry retired as a clinical lab scientist at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, where she lives with her husband, Donald. * Susan Urban Horsey and her daughter-in-law, Amy Martineau, are partners in ZONA, a home furnishings and gift store in central Aspen. Susan’s son, Dan, and his wife, Amy, have four children, so Susan is also "grandmother deluxe." * David Jenkins retired from his medical practice in gastroenterology and lives in Tulsa, Okla. He enjoys traveling, hiking, biking, golfing and Elderhostels. He takes courses at the University of Tulsa and enjoys judging ice skating events, "unless the crowd boos my marks." * Margaret Merriman Johnson is a retired special education teacher. She lives in Denver and spends her time helping the elderly. * Nancy Ellis Keith and her husband, Bo, are retired and living in Albuquerque, where they enjoy traveling, skiing and tennis. They do volunteer work and serve on numerous committees and associations. * John Knight, chairman, president, and CEO of Viking Drill & Tool in St. Paul, is proud to report that 73 percent of his company has been sold to its employees. In the cutting tool industry, they are one of the top performers in the world. John has served on CC’s board of trustees for 22 years and enjoys his new role as chair emeritus. * John Larkin is a dean at the graduate school at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. * John and Suzanne Gray ’55 Listemann are retired and living in Cortez, Colo.

’59 John Fernald is a district attorney investigator/deputy sheriff with Imperial County, Calif. For the past two years, John has been an active member of the Riverside County Fire Department, based in Beaumont, Calif. He is qualified as a low-angle rescue specialist, auto extrication specialist, and arson investigator. In February, he received the "Firefighter of the Year" award. * Charlene Dreher Mell is the part-time church librarian at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and is the organist and director of music at a small church in Tamarac, Fla. ’61 Susan Evans, retired and living in Falls Church, Va., can be reached at sueevans@erols.com * Glenna Maxey Goodacre designed the Sacagawea images for the new $1 coin. At the magazine’s deadline, the image of Sacagawea carrying a child on her back was selected for the front of the coin. The final design for the back of the coin had not been decided, but the selections were various depictions of eagles, also designed by Glenna. * Linda Talbert von Helms, superintendent for Heber School District in Heber, Calif., has two daughters, Heather and Gretchen.

 

’63 Gil Graboski lives in Red Deer, Alberta. He retired from school administration five years ago. He raises miniature horses and Newfoundland dogs, plays old-timers' hockey and lots of golf. "I have a super grandson," he reports. * Robert Graham is a partner with McKay, Byrne and Graham in Los Angeles. * Judith Coles Harper is an accountant with Chevron Production Co. in Concord, Calif. * Ginny Metcalf Heckel and husband Evan ’64 live in Houston, Texas, where she is director of the Kelsey-Seybold Research Foundation. * Erv Hinds practices medicine and has established the New Mexico Pain and Wellness Center in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, a multidisciplinary center with new technology to deal with acute, chronic, and cancer pain. He is finishing a book for laymen on pain, A Doctor Has a Change of Heart, due out soon. * David Hite will retire as deputy director of the Colorado Legislative Council at the end of 1999. He is attempting to climb the top 100 peaks in Colorado. He completed a trek in the Everest region of Nepal last fall. * Claudia Elkins Humphries is a seventh and eighth grade English/government teacher at Carden Arbor View School in Upland, Calif. She founded the school in 1981, and served as headmistress for seven years. In 1987, she "stepped down" to teach full time and raise seven children with her husband of 26 years, Bert. Their sons and daughters have attended SMU, Temple, Memphis, and San Francisco State. Two more are in high school. Their seventh child died in 1988. * Anne Wilson Jacobson is an administrator for the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Peoria, Ariz. Married for 35 years, she has two adult children and one grandchild, and is plotting a career change. * Diane Johnston lives in Raleigh, N.C., and is doing a "return engagement at IBM — but going back to Paris in March, Alaska in May, the golf course this summer, and Emerald Isle, N.C. "God’s beach" in September." * Terry Kidner teaches at the Kent Place School in Summit, N.J. In 1998, her school awarded her "with a major slice of summer grant money, not only to attend the Lewis Carroll Centenary Conference at Christ Church, but also to trail ride on Exmoor in Somerset." Her son, Jesse, "is a happy and successful freshman at Tulane; New Orleans is a very cool (tho’ bizarre) place to visit. His parents will really really try to forget that he lost his Christmas airline tickets, only to find them a week later in his dorm room refrigerator (no comment) after a comedy of (t)errors that would be both too boring and too familiar to include." * John Kuglin still works for the Associated Press, where he has been for 25 years, in Helena, Mont. He does a lot of backpacking, fishing, hunting and skiing with 16-year-old son, Tom. ’64 Bill Hybl is the community campaign chair for the American Red Cross’ Pikes Peak Chapter for 1999.

’65 Art Basham was recognized in the March/April 1999 issue of San Jose Magazine as one of Silicon Valley’s "Top Doctors." Art is an ophthalmologist and practices in Los Gatos, Calif. * David Helms is CEO of the Association for Health Services Research, based in Washington, D.C. David is also president of the Alpha Center, a non-profit health policy center supporting the development of research and its translation into policy. The two entities will be linked to allow David to remain as president of the Alpha Center. * John Van Ness is associate vice president at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. * Gregory Wingate is a plastic surgeon in Phoenix.

 

’66 For 16 years, Susan Phillips Cohen has been the social worker in the Animal Medical Center in New York ("the world’s busiest animal hospital"), a job that landed her on The Oprah Winfrey Show twice. She is also a first-time grandmother to grandson, Quinn. * Joanne Reiss Colt was elected as an at-large member of the city council in Colorado Springs.

’69 Sarah Daniel’s poem"Applied Mythology" won the poetry section of the Society of Southwestern Authors literary contest and was printed in "The Story Teller 1998." * Jane Lubchenco and her husband, Bruce Menge, both professors at Oregon State University, will be the principal investigators in a five-year, $17.7 million study of the near-shore environment stretching from Oregon to Southern California. Jane will lead the consortium, which includes three California universities. The funds for the study were given by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. * The 125th anniversary of CC was cause for celebration for Chad Milton and his wife, Ann. They hosted alumni and parents at their home in Prairie Village, Kan., in January. * Karen Mingst, the author of Essentials of International Relations, is a professor in the political science department at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. * Greg Smith was appointed senior clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine, School of Medicine, at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. * Donald Sperry has become "Harry the Hat" in the gaming industry in California. * Maude Southwell Wahlman, professor of global arts and art history at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, can be reached at mwahlman@cctr.umkc.edu

’73 Jay Remer and business partner, Greg Cohane, purchased a 200-year-old building in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and spent two years restoring it into a first-class inn. The Windsor House of St. Andrew's celebrated its grand opening this past spring. * Craig Werner has authored two works, Up Around the Bend: The Oral History of Creedence Clearwater Revival and A Change is Gonna Come: Music, Race and the Soul of America. Craig is a professor of African-American studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was on campus in March to deliver a lecture entitled "There’s a Bad Moon Rising, or Have a Happy Day, or How the Sixties Became the Seventies."

Your 25th reunion will be celebrated Oct. 15-17! * An attorney in Colorado Springs, Deborah Adams-Campbell is a new board member of Citizens' Project, a local organization dedicated to upholding the traditional values of pluralism, freedom of religion, and the separation of church and state. * Babalola Ayoola lives in Ibadan, Nigeria, where he is involved in the transition program to usher in a democratically elected civilian government. * Kea Bockus Bardeen is a consultant with PCG, Inc., in Lakewood, Colo. * Carol Barton and Jim Sager were married Dec. 4. They live in Aurora, Colo., where Carol is vice president of finance and administration for the Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory.
