By JOAN SCHNEIDER FARRIS '78

The late Walt Bennett '55, a Phi Beta Kappa who played football and earned degrees in math and physics, started my family's legacy story. Walt, who became a well-known nuclear physicist, inspired his second cousin, John Richard ("Jack") Farris Jr. '68 to attend CC. Jack loved the school so much; he always shared fond memories of his college days with his kid brother, Dan (my future husband). Dan planned to apply to CC but attended California State University at Long Beach.

After I graduated from CC in 1978, I moved to Long Beach. One day, Dan saw the Colorado College decal on my car and we struck up a conversation. We immediately had a common subject to discuss. A year later, we were married. We even visited CC on our honeymoon!

Now, over 20 years later, our nephew, Adam Farris '03 (Jack's son), is attending CC. The legacy continues.

Our children, Rebekah Abigail and Joel, sort of attend CC: she is enrolled in the Colorado College Children's Center. I also have participated in the Adopt-A-Student program for more than five years and have my own line of CC "children": Miako Polson '98, Andrea Swenson '99, Sarah Clark '00, Barbara Swenson '01, Jennifer Miller '02, and Hannah Allen-Yeager '03.
