Hall of Fame Adds Fab Four

By DAVE MOROSS, sports information director

Four distinguished alumni have been inducted into CC's Athletics Hall of Fame. They are hockey great Doug Palazzari '74, world-class cyclist Allison Dunlap '91, former football standout Pat Geonetta '83; and the late Lloyd E. "Lew" Worner '42, who went on to serve as the college's president for 18 years.

Doug Palazzari

Doug Palazzari, a two-time All-Americanduring his illustrious playing career (1970-74) with the Tigers, still ranks third on the hockey program's all-time scoring list with 228 career points (95 goals, 133 assists). He is one of only five CC players in history to reach the 200-point plateau. Currently executive director of USA Hockey headquartered in Colorado Springs, Palazzari went on to play professionally for a decade, mostly with Salt Lake City of the Central Hockey League. In 1997 he was honored as the CHL's all-time greatest player.

A 1996 road cycling Olympian, Allison Dunlap has competed worldwide for the last decade after receiving her bachelor's degree in biology from Colorado College. She has been selected for nine U.S. World Championship teams, including road, mountain bike and cyclo-cross. Recent accolades include 1997-99 USA Cycling Female Biker of the Year and Colorado Sportswoman of the Year (cycling) 1997-98. Her achievements have earned her an automatic spot on the 2000 U.S. Olympic mountain bike team. She currently serves on the U.S. Cylcing Federation board of trustees.

Pat Geonetta rushed for a moder-day college record of 298 yards in one game agains Nebraska Wesleyan as a sophomore in 1980. Consistent and durable throughout his four seasons with the Tigers, the 5-7, 175-pound speedster averaged 4.99 yards per carry and 104 per game while amassing 2,818 rushing yards for his career. Geonetta, who went on to become a special agent with the FBI, also set records as a member of Colorado College's track and field team.

Lew Worner served as CC's ninth president for 18 years (1963-81), as dean of the college for eight (1946-55). As president, he presided over the development and implementation of the college's signature Block Plan. A great supporter of athletics, he also found time to coach the golf team. His first few years in office saw the completion of Schlessman Pool and Honnen Ice Rink, followed by the construction of five major buildings, including El Pomar Sports Center, as well as major improvements to several others.

Worner was a major figure in higher education throughout his career and an active participant in the civic life of Colorado Springs, where he was a founding member of the Pikes Peak United Way and president of the local chapter of the American Red Cross. After a long illness, he died on December 5, 1996, in Colorado Springs at the age of 78.

Saddle Up

Megan Hytjan '00

Equestrian team organizers have cleared the final hurdle in their effort to become CC's newest club sport.

Megan Hytjan '00 (pictured), who organized the 12-member team last year, says a generous donation from Wolf Creek Range assured competition in English jumping events this year. In January and February, CC riders challenged teams from the Air Force Academy, CSU, CU-Boulder, and the University of Denver.

Construction Update

After months of negotiation, the North End Neighbors and City Planning recently reached an agreement that will allow the design for the three academic theme houses to be finalized. Two of the theme houses remain on the corner of old Wood Ave and Uintah, and the third will be located on Cascade between Haskell House (the French language house).

To accommodate neighbors' concerns, an additional 60 parking spaces will be available on the main campus rather than at the proposed site of Glen and Uintah. The campus Design Review Board is working with Civitas, a landscape and planning architect, on sites for the additional parking.

"The goal is to have some of the additional parking available by the fall of 2000," says Dave Lord, business manager and project director of the Western Ridge development.

Construction for the Western Ridge is moving forward with underground utility work. In addition, crews have poured the foundation for a 60-bed apartment building behind Loomis, scheduled to welcome students as early as next fall.

The Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority Houses will be finished by February 2000, and the Delta Gamma Sorority House by May 2000.

Election Time

Two are vying for the alumni trustee postion soon to be vacated by Karen Reinking Heard '82.

Natalie Collins Battersbee '61
The principal of an inner-city high school in Los Angeles, Natalie is an avid CC recruiter, particularly of students of color. Natalie's daughter, Stacy, recently graduated from CC. If the name Collins sounds familiar, it's because Natalie is the daughter of long-time athletics trainer Rosie Collins.

Karen Anderson Medville '85
Widely recognized as one of the country's leading Native American scientists, Karen teaches at Arizona State. She is also the parent of a recent CC graduate, Shawnetta. Karen, who attended CC as a non-traditional student (a single mother), was awarded an honorary degree from CC last fall.

Alumni will find a ballot in their mailboxes later this spring.

Karen's term expires June 30,2000. Continuing on the board as elected Alumni Trustees are Fred Galves '83 and Gail Bundy '62.
