Fuller Named First LEW Professor

With the goal met of raising $1.5 million to endow the Lloyd Edson Worner Distinguished Service Professorship, it was only a matter of time before the first LEW Professor was chosen. At the first faculty m eeting of the year in September, President Kathryn Mohrman announced the appointment of Dean Tim Fuller, who will take the post beginning in the 1999-2000 academic year.

In a campuswide memo, President Mohrman explained, "There is no one at the college who better represents exemplary teaching and scholarship within the context of liberal learning...In the 33 years he has been on this campus, he has done it all with integrity and commitment. Tim's intellectual interests...are closely allied with Lew Worner's own values...I believe this choice would have pleased Lew very much."

Following the announcement and a lengthy round of applause at the faculty meeting, Dean Fuller expressed his thoughts on returning to the classroom full time: "What I set out to do was teach and write, and this seems like an appropriate moment to return to those things. I have great confidence in the strength of the college and the faculty, and I'm not making this change based on any unhappiness. There is a tradition of Colorado College deans coming from and returning to the faculty."

Fuller will continue to serve as dean until the end of the academic year. The search for a new dean will begin immediately. "It is my intention," President Mohrman wrote in a memo to the campus community, "to follow the college's tradition and to choose a dean from within the ranks of the current faculty." (See the December 1998 Access story for an update on the new dean.)

The professorship was created by friends and colleagues of the late Lloyd Edson Worner, who devoted nearly 40 years to Colorado College, his alma mater. He was a student, a member of the faculty, a dean, and president from 1963 until 1981. Achievements during his tenure as president include adoption of the Block Plan and the introduction of the honor code. Awarded to a Colorado College professor on a rotating three-year basis, the Worner Professorship is given on the basis of exemplary teaching and scholarship within the context of liberal learning.
