Description

Exhibit

“ReOrientations” examines the historical genesis and contemporary manifestations of Orientalism — a concept that places the East (the Middle East and Asia) in opposition to the European West. Orientalist images often characterize the “Orient” as exotic, violent, or hypersexualized. “ReOrientations” examines the legacy of Orientalism through a consideration of historical and contemporary artworks.  The exhibition features 19th-century French Orientalist paintings and works on paper from the collection of the Dahesh Museum, placed alongside photographs by contemporary artists Lalla Essaydi and Ibi Ibrahim.

The exhibition catalog includes a feature article by Gale Murray, professor of art history, and short essays by Colorado College faculty from a variety of disciplines, including: Claire Oberon Garcia, professor of English/director of Race and Ethnic Studies; Jessica Hunter-Larsen, IDEA curator; and Jane Murphy, associate professor of history; Ruth Kolarik, professor of art history; Robert Lee, professor of political science; and Michael O’Riley, associate professor of French, Italian, and Arabic. Rashna B. Singh, visiting professor of English/Race and Ethnic Studies, contributed interpretive text to the exhibition. “ReOrientations” runs March 25-April 30; closed April 14-19.  IDEA Space is open to the public Monday through Friday, 1-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m.
