Sperry S. and Ella Graber Packard Hall of Music and Art
Room 9 - Packard Hall, 5 W. Cache La Poudre St. (map)
Nickolai Kolarov, DMA and Nikolay Gueorguiev will offer an overview of Bulgarian music; from the core features of folklore to the influences and borrowings by the Bulgarian avant-garde, to the reverse influence of modern music on the musical folklore. Works of Ivan Spassov--one of the pioneers of the avant-garde in Bulgaria in the 1960s--will be analyzed, among others. The lecturers, who are part of the Balkanicus Ensemble and its concert on the previous night, will use their instruments – the folk traditional gadulka and cello – to illustrate their talk.
