This one-day workshop, taught by Professor Jane Hillberry, will explore the power of poetry. Through exercises designed to uncover their most compelling material and through discussion of technique in writing, students will cultivate the ability to write poetry that has the power to connect us with ourselves and with others. Through their own writing and through reading the work of contemporary poets, students will also investigate the power of poetry to bring pleasure, to transform experience, and to enlarge understanding of one another. No prior writing experience or knowledge of poetry is necessary. The number of students for this class is limited to 12.
Jane Hilberry has taught literature and creative writing at Colorado College for 25 years. She also teaches arts-based leadership development courses in the United States and Canada. Her books of poetry include "Body Painting" and, with her father Conrad Hilberry, "This Awkward Art: Poems by a Father and Daughter." She has published a book of art criticism and biography titled "The Erotic Art of Edgar Britton" and co-authored a book on email titled "Get Smart! How Email Can Make or Break Your Career—and Your Organization." Her greatest joy as a teacher comes from helping others connect with their creative powers.
