Engineering Half-Block!

Build It!

The world of design is a border town. Its inhabitants compelled to split their time between the worlds of form and function. This is the home of the structural engineer. Their intrinsic desire is to allow the efficient realization of the architects dream. Beauty for beauty’s sake is not justification enough for these individuals. Their art is of a different kind. Their art is an experiment to push their limits of constructability while maintaining a pure aesthetic. This pursuit has led to structural engineers being praised for their production of some of humanities most cherished sculptures and monuments. The pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, the Gateway Arch, and the tensegrity sculptures are just a handful of examples of impressive works enabled by the structural engineer.

Class time will be split between lectures on the fundamentals of structural engineering and assembling a structurally challenging sculptural piece.
