At Colorado College, the thematic minor in journalism is a starting point for students to look at the world through journalists’ eyes.  The late Ruth Barton, an English professor who was the guiding force behind the minor’s approval in 1995, believed that journalism is a vital part of a liberal arts education.

“[T]he most important thing about journalism in relation to liberal arts is this:  journalists ask questions,” she wrote.  “More important than being able to find answers is being able to ask questions:  significant, appropriate, carefully defined and articulated questions.”

Asking questions, thinking critically, and writing clearly and cogently are at the heart of excellent journalism.  Our course offerings embrace the study of news theory and ethical practice through writing, documentary filmmaking, and digital platforms, as we work closely with the Film and New Media Studies Program.
