Focuses on the cultural production following emancipation from Spanish and Portuguese colonial rule. Works reflect the main cultural and historical processes as well as the intellectual projects of the post-independence period. Examines neoclassicism, romanticism, liberalism, realism, indigenismo, gauchesca, as well as modernism and the early literary vanguards. (Not offered 2018-19).
