Heredity, gene expression, physiology, and experimental manipulation of microbial genomes. Through lecture and primary literature, the course explores microbial life as investigated using experimental genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and biochemistry, with an emphasis on bacteria and the fundamental processes of cellular life such as metabolism, regulation of gene expression, synthesis and assembly of supramolecular structures, and signal transduction. Prerequisite: 1)BY 231 or Biology 232 or Molecular Biology 231 and 2) Chemistry & Biochemistry 251 or consent of instructor.
