ED255 – Urban Education

In this course, we will explore the context of urban education from both students’ and teachers’ perspectives. We will investigate where and how urban students live, analyze recurring themes present in urban classrooms, and examine successful strategies for teaching in urban settings. A goal of this course is to move beyond the surface level discussions to ones that get at some root causes and outcomes associated with analyses of learning contexts such as oppression, marginalization, and inequality. We will answer questions about how issues of class, gender, and race influence what educators and students have the opportunity to learn, teach, and experience in urban contexts Meets the Critical Perspectives: Social Inequality requirement.
