Compares the experiences of diverse groups of the African Diaspora, with special emphasis on the Caribbean basin and Brazil. Topics include: race, racism and nation-building; the legacy of slavery and contemporary labor processes, conceptualizing the 'Africa' in African-American cultures; variable social constructions of racial categories; maroons and other communities of resistance; and several African-American religions (Candomble, Umbanda, Voudoun, Santeria, Rastafarianism). May meet either the Critical Perspectives: Global Cultures or Social Inequality requirement. (Not offered 2016-17).
