The forms of literary expression and experience; the purposes of literature; the relationship between form and content, and genre and theme; the differences between poetry and prose; the approaches to meanings in texts; the analysis of how a work can be both universal and a product of a particular historical period and society. Emphasis on Western tradition, with readings from antiquity to the modern age. (Not offered 2022-23).
