AN371 - Culture Contact and Writing Cultures

This course will incorporate the work of anthropology and cultural studies to introduce students to how foreign cultures were experienced and represented by travelers, explorers, colonial administrators and anthropologists and will focus on forms of writing associated with conquest and colonialism. Students will then be introduced to the travel and tourism genre of representation and will analyze travel writing as cultural politics and the politics of tourism. The course will conclude with an examination of the new ethnography and writing cultures. May meet either the Critical Perspectives: Global Cultures or Social Inequality requirement. (Not offered 2024-25).

Prerequisite: one previous cultural anthropology course or consent of instructor.
