Profile: Marty Sertich '06
All-America center Marty Sertich, who finished the 2004-05 season with a nation-leading 64 points, is the second Colorado College player in three years to win the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Sertich was announced as the 2005 recipient during a ceremony in conjunction with the NCAA Frozen Four. For Sertich, it seems to run in the family. His father, Steve, played for Colorado College in the early 1970s and skated for the United States at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. The municipal rink in Colorado Springs is named after his paternal grandfather, Mark "Pa" Sertich. If that wasn't enough, his other grandfather – Tony Frasca – was an All-American at CC in the early 1950s. Marty's younger brother, Mike, also plays for the Tigers. One of four First-Team All-Americans on last season's Colorado College roster, Sertich joins former teammate Peter Sejna (2003) as the only two CC players ever to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Junior left wing Brett Sterling, the nation's top goal scorer with 34, also was a Top 3 finalist.

Profile: Katlin Okamoto '07
A three-year captain at Taos High School who earned First-Team All-State honors in both her junior and senior years, Okamoto knows her way down a soccer field. She served as captain of her Albuquerque United club and Olympic Development teams, led both to state and tournament championships, and was voted team MVP of her high school team in 1999. Luckily for CC, Okamoto came to campus to interview for a merit scholarship and decided that she was interested in playing here. Luckily for everyone, she received the CC Scholar award and when she came to campus, she walked onto the soccer field only to be voted rookie of the year. An honors student who loves sushi and skiing, Okamoto knows that it will be difficult to balance all her commitments, but says, "The CC professors have been very supportive of my athletic schedule. They often ask about how the team is doing and even try to attend games!"

We believe that it is essential to cultivate a mind-body connection, and our athletics department offers students a number of ways to start cultivating this connection. Students benefit from the use of all our outstanding facilities, including El Pomar Sports Center, which is equipped with two gymnasiums, racquetball courts, and a climbing wall; Honnen Ice Rink, a regulation hockey rink; an outdoor track, and tennis courts.

Women's Soccer- Officially formed as a club program in 1975, women's soccer at Colorado College quickly earned a reputation as one of the most popular sports on campus. The team went undefeated (8-0) during its first year of existence and achieved varsity status in 1978. A rising powerhouse among the Division I elite, Colorado College women's soccer can boast 25 winning seasons in its 28 years of existence. CC's tradition of excellence in women's soccer has produced 14 All-Americans. A number of players have gone on to play professionally, and others have graduated to the collegiate coaching ranks.

Men's Ice Hockey- In 2005, the Tigers claimed a share of their eighth Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship, adding another chapter to the fabled history of a program that has spanned eight decades. Since 1994 the team has earned five regular-season league titles, 10 home-ice playoff berths in 12 years, and nine NCAA tournament bids. CC's recent string of success has included trips to the national "Frozen Four" in 1996, 1997, and again in 2005. College and community come together at the World Arena during hockey season to enjoy the spirit and excitement of Tiger Hockey.

 

Varsity Division III

Colorado College has a proud tradition of athletic and academic success, and this year was named one of the top colleges in the NCSA’s Power rankings (first among independent programs), which recognizes combined athletic and academic prowess. Athletically, CC produced eight individual All-Americans during the 2005-06 school year when the  Division III women’s lacrosse and volleyball squads, earned NCAA post-season playoff bids. Two years ago, Patrick McGinnis ’05 was named NCAA Division III Player of the Year in men’s soccer.  McGinnis is one of several CC student athletes to earn academic All-American honors in recent years, while the women’s basketball team posted the highest grade-point average among the nation’s Division III programs last season. At Colorado College, athletes are able to pursue their intellectual and athletic interests with intensity in an environment where students can succeed in both. This success is achieved while competing with colleges from across the nation.  Since Colorado College is the only Division III school in Colorado, most of our teams travel extensively.  This is enabled by the flexibility of our unique Block Plan. This year, CC joins the SCAC conference and looks forward to the new challenges that this will bring.

intramurals

The Colorado College intramural sports program provides diverse programming that is geared toward promoting healthy lifestyles. This mission is so successful that 75 percent of all CC students participate in some kind of intramural sport while at CC.

Students participate in activities ranging from broomball to inner-tube water polo, and benefit from CC’s supportive intramural philosophy that accommodates participants with different skill levels, recreational interests, and attitudes toward sports. wellness program

The Colorado College wellness program provides educational and motivational programs to encourage and support healthy lifestyles. Recreational activities include aerobics, badminton, a climbing wall, equestrian lessons, karate, scuba diving, and yoga, as well as health and awareness programs providing blood screening, ergonomics, fitness assessments, flu shots, and selfdefense training.
CC Celebrates National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Colorado College celebrated National Girls &Women in Sports Day; activities included a pre-game expo featuring Tiger women’s sports teams and world mountain bike champion Alison Dunlap ‘91, special halftime contests, and a post-game autograph session with the women’s basketball team. CC students also collected household items for a local organization that aims to reduce domestic violence through education, intervention, and treatment services.
