Sherpas of NepalA tiny minority within Nepal, Sherpas are world famous for their work in the mountaineering industry. Most Westerners, however, know little about Sherpas beyond this fact. The course will first situate Sherpas within the national and historical context of Nepal, and then explore Sherpa history, culture, and religion, primarily from an anthropological perspective. Students will critically examine contemporary issues such as trekking, tourism, national parks, and conservation as they gain an appreciation for the interrelatedness of economic, social, and political issues.
Households and Markets: Women and the EconomyThis block investigates how women's and men's roles have evolved by focusing on changes in the marketplace and in household dynamics. Students examine phenomena such as marriage, fertility, education of children, and the allocation of time, while they look at the family as a governance structure for economic activity by discussing family farms and family-managed firms. Students compare the family to social organizations, including the market and government, and discover the impact of women's economic participation.

“Research questions don’t fit neatly into hour-long class segments. Students need sufficient
time to explore ideas and follow through on them without being disrupted by a bell. The
Block Plan gives them time to devote to pursuing ideas and independent research. It’s an
enormous luxury that most other colleges don’t have. Our system also fosters interaction
and research between students and faculty, so we can become colleagues and co-workers on
an investigative team.”
