Service Leadership Scholarship, Frederick Morley Jr. Scholarship
Most of the learning I've done here has taken place after class has ended for the day, in late-night dorm room seminars, weekend service work that counterbalances the ivory-tower solitude of the school week, or unexpected encounters that last only a few minutes in time but endure for an eternity in memory. They say that a liberal arts education teaches you how to think, and here at CC, I'm forever learning how to think about myself and others. I have found no easy answers. But I have found great-spirited friends to walk beside me in the journey. This is what matters most.

Every morning as I wake up and open my window shades to gaze upon the majestic Pikes Peak, I experience a moment of disbelief; I am still awe struck at the multitude of remarkable opportunities I have had at Colorado College. The past three years have been filled with unforgettable moments from athletics (track and soccer) to the operating room and everything in between. I have made wonderful relationships with friends and professors, and the neverending learning experiences have continually captivated my mind.

To be chosen for this scholarship is the highest honor I could imagine. I run the radio station here at school now, and I hope to continue with radio when I attend graduate school. I have participated in the jazz band here at Colorado College every semester so far…I play the baritone saxophone. Thank you for your generosity and for choosing me to receive the Charlotte P. Autrey Endowed Scholarship Fund for Music.

Neuroscience MajorCheley Family Memorial Scholarship
Colorado College means so much to me. Not only have I been provided with amazing educational opportunities, but social experiences as well. I have been privileged to take a variety of classes with excellent professors throughout the different departments. I dance in both the fall and spring Dance Workshop productions. I am the chief operations officer for the Catalyst newspaper, as well as a sports reporter, co-chair of Hillel, co-chair of the Education Committee for the Honor Council, and an avid skier. I am pursuing a major in neuroscience and completing the pre-med track. I hope one day to become a pediatrician in Colorado.

Without the scholarship I have there’s no way I could come to a school like CC. I’ve been able to study abroad, play in numerous intramural sports, do a service trip to India and get a great education I truly feel I couldn’t get anywhere else. I’m extremely grateful to all of the donors for giving me and so many more these opportunities. Last year I was accepted to the International Service Program through the Center for Service and Learning. I am now in my junior year at CC and still loving every second of it. I am a sociology major and plan on a minor in education as well as art studio.

Southwest Studies MajorRoland Jackson War Memorial Scholarship
When I first received this scholarship from the CC financial aid office, I thought it was both interesting and ironic that it was entitled the “Roland Jackson War Memorial Scholarship,” because of my particular interest in doing peace work. However, more than anything the class (The Poet as a Witness to War) taught me that remembering and honoring wars, and the loved ones who were affected by them, is essential to creating a healthier, more peaceful world. I feel honored and humbled to think that this scholarship, created in memory of a loved one who served, is helping me to learn about how to create peace in the world. I have intensified my work in the CC Garden/Farm Club, now holding one of the main organizing positions. The club is greatly meaningful to me because it gives me the opportunity to participate in local and organic food activism, to learn by doing, to teach and be taught by peers, and to acquire useful fundraising and organizational skills.

The crosswalk fits my preconceptions of where I am and where I want to be in the future after CC. For me, CC is the crossing of a barrier that is both physical and mental. On the other side is an open ‘world,’ like a tree and its branches. A metaphorical, as well as a physical pathway, that can define my life after CC. A fitting symbol of growing up…

Over the past three years I have been learning how to play the violin, cello, piano, banjo (both tenor and five-string), guitar, mandolin, mandocello, and accordion. I am also very excited that a professor in the philosophy department here just agreed to work with me on a book I have been writing for a few years now. My time at CC has been absolutely extraordinary. Attending Colorado College has given me fuel to grow and experience in ways that I never thought would be possible.

I am a first-generation Korean-American and I am grateful that your generosity has given me the opportunity to continue my education and to fulfill my American dream. I believe that the education I received and continue to receive inside and outside the classrooms of Colorado College has allowed me to mature into a stronger, confident young female. During my three years, I have learned to be a leader to my peers and a voice for the students to faculty and staff members. At Colorado College, I was the co-chair of the Korean-American Student Association (KASA), I am a volunteer for Mighty Math, which is a student club that tutors middle school students in math, I have been a Priddy Trip Leader for two years, I lead service trips through the organization called Saturday of Service, and I am a student representative for Heads of State and The Minority Student Concerns Committee.

This scholarship will allow me to graduate from Colorado College with minimum debt, so I can pursue my future. Since I was young I have dreamed of becoming a doctor. I have been pursuing that dream ever since. When I was awarded this scholarship, that dream seemed even more plausible. I am very grateful and honored to be here under the Donald R. Spurgeon Scholarship Fund.
