CLASSROOM VIDEOTAPING

The Crown Faculty Center stands prepared to videotape classes for any faculty member who wishes to use this tool for evaluating what goes on in the classroom. The faculty member who asks to be taped remains in full control of the disposition of the tape: if he or she wishes to view it privately then discard it, that is fine. Alternatively, the CFC will help the faculty member to select a few colleagues who would view the tape and discuss the pedagogical issues raised by it. In no case will these tapes be made available for the purpose of formal review linked to tenure and promotion.

The CFC eventually intends to videotape a series of classes at Colorado College, always with the consent of the teaching faculty. The purpose is to establish a library of styles around which discussions could be organized.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this service, please contact Ash Merscher at 719-389-6252 to set up an appointment.

CONSULTATION

The CFC director will consult with any faculty member regarding teaching, learning styles, classroom management, technology, or a number of other issues. Contact Paul Kuerbis at 719-389-6726 if you would like to take advantage of his expertise

.

LUNCHEONS

The Crown Faculty Center sponsors one or more luncheon discussions each block.

NEW FACULTY

To help all first-year, full-time faculty adjust to and thrive under the Block Plan, the Teaching and Learning Center offers:

New Faculty Orientation: A day at the CC cabin for new faculty to learn about life on the block plan.

New Faculty ListServ: An e-mail list specifically for new faculty.

Monthly Meetings for New Faculty: These get-togethers have proved to be an effective forum for new faculty members to discuss triumphs and tribulations and to exchange candid advice and useful techniques.

PUBLICATION

In the fall of 1998 the CFC published a booklet entitled "What Works & How Do We Know It Works?" The booklet includes minutes from 1997-98 lunches on that theme as well as an essay by the CFC Director. The essay sums up assessment practices at Colorado College.

In the fall of 1999 the CFC published a booklet entitled "The Jousts of Teaching at a Liberal Arts College." Written by Colorado College professor Bill Hochman, the booklet addresses some of the challenges faced by liberal arts faculty.

Copies of both booklets are available in the Crown Faculty Center

RELEASE TIME

Thanks to the generosity of the Edith Gaylord Harper, the Crown Faculty Center offers two blocks of released time each year for faculty who want to improve existing courses through reorganization and reconceptualization of subject matter and/or development of new approaches to teaching in the interest of more effective student learning. Course enhancement may, but need not necessarily, include the introduction of new technologies. Recipients of such blocks agree to communicate with colleagues about their achievements and discoveries through the Teaching and Learning Center. These blocks will be awarded upon application to the Research and Faculty Development Board.

TEAGLE

TRAVEL

Within the limits of its means, the CFC helps faculty travel to meetings focused on pedagogy in higher education. It assists with travel expenses that cannot be covered through the Dean's travel budget or division research and development funds.

WORKSHOPS

The center occasionally sponsors workshops for faculty. Our own faculty sometimes do afternoon seminars on the use of technology in the Classroom. Faculty who have received honoraria to enhance their own uses of technology often utilize this format to share their discoveries with colleagues.
