2006 CC Sustainability Award Winners

The 2006 winners of the Colorado College Sustainability Award are Michael Foley, Mark Smith, and Jill Kluge. The awards were presented at the 2006 Timothy Linnemann Memorial Lecture by Sally Meyer, Professor of Chemistry and Environmental Science. Pictures of the award recipients and the citations are given below, and thanks to everyone for very thoughtful nominations this year!

As a senior in the Environmental Science Program, Michael Foley has strongly promoted the development and use of biodiesel on the Colorado College campus. He also has traveled throughout Colorado promoting its development. These efforts have raised student awareness at CC regarding this important alternative fuel.

"Michael Foley has worked on the Colorado College biodiesel project for the three years he has been at CC...Over the course of the project, Mike has run biodiesel in CC's Mobile Lab, lawn mowers, and buses. He is one of the most intelligent and philanthropic individuals I know." -Spencer Gordon '06

Mark Smith has contributed to environmental awareness on the Colorado College campus through his green speaker series on Environmental Economics and courses in water resource management. His leadership of the parking committee developed equitable policies for a scarce campus resource.

"Because of Professor Smith's commitment to education and the economics of water management, I have become a much more engaged citizen of the West, because I better understand the limiting factor of economics and environmental prosperity in the region - water" -Jared Kapela '06

Jill Kluge saved tremendous campus resources and reduced paper waste by converting External Relations publications to digital format. Her interest in the environment saves the Colorado College campus nearly $6000 a year.

"Jill Kluge changed the process of how the External Relations office distributes news clips, saving an outrageous amount of paper, and about $6000 a year in paper, copier supply, and postage expense...Jill's immediate reaction to the old wasteful process makes me think about the huge impact that one new process can have on the environment and our thinking." -Jane Turnis, External Relations
