Anthropology of Food
Block B: June 29 - July 17
1 CC unit (4 semester hours). Fulfills the Critical Perspectives: Diverse Cultures and Critiques requirement at Colorado College. One social sciences credit.

This course will explore food concepts, analytical methods, and the food habits of different ethnic groups.   This course relies on meaning-interpretive and materialist perspectives to help us understand how food has the ability to convey meaning as well as to nourish our bodies.   We will focus on several theoretical perspectives used in the analysis of food: structuralism, semiotics, symbolism, and feminism. A field trip to Texas to visit organic farmers, restaurateurs, and food companies is included in this course.

This course also incorporates a strong writing emphasis component. The readings will provide students with models and subject matter for the writing assignments.

Program fee (in addition to tuition): $200
Prerequisites:
None. Enrollment is limited to 12 students. A non-refundable $100 course deposit is required to enroll in this class. The deposit will be credited to your final tuition payment.
