PS 236 7910 Why do some countries develop democracy while others end up with dictatorship? The course is organized around empirical questions that reflect both interesting phenomena and puzzles that call for explanation. Topics include modern states, origins of democracy and dictatorship, nongovernmental organizations, ethnic/religious conflicts as well as the issues of institutional designs (parliamentarism vs. presidentialism, consensual vs. majoritarian democracy, federalism and decentralization). Prerequisites: None. Enrollment is limited to 25 students. A non-refundable $100 deposit is required in order to enroll in this course. The deposit will go toward your final tuition payment.
