Sunday, June 22, 2008 12:30 p.m. – end of concert Cost: $60 (includes orchestra tickets) $50 (for those with previously purchased tickets) Instructor: Michael Grace Location: The Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center, 825 N. Cascade Ave., Flex Room This class is offered in conjunction with the concert by the Summer Music Festival orchestra at 3p.m. in the new Cornerstone Arts Center. Participants will receive a ticket for the concert and a private wine-and-light buffet reception afterwards. In the class, we will explore the origin and growth of the symphony orchestra. We will learn about the instruments that make up the orchestra and survey some of the great music written for it. Special attention will be given to the repertoire of the orchestra concert. Scott Yoo, conductor of the Festival Orchestra, will be a part of the class, as well as some of the musicians in the orchestra who will discuss their instruments and their place in the orchestra. Michael D. Grace received his B.A. and M.A. from Colorado College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. He became instructor in music at Colorado College in 1967, assistant professor of music in 1971, and has been professor of music since 1986. Professor Grace founded and directs the Colorado College Collegium Musicum and the Summer Conservatory and Music Festival, and served as Dean of the Summer Session from 1987 to 1990. Grace was acting president of Colorado College from 1992-1993. |
