INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS PRINTING Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15, 2008 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days Cost: $135 Instructor: Colin Frazer (see his bio with the Local and Natural Papermaking course) Location: The Colorado College Press, 1029 N. Nevada Ave. In this two-day workshop we will investigate the rich history of printing through the manipulation of hand-set metal type at The Press at Colorado College. Each student will learn how to set type by hand, how to mix ink and how to print with on a cylinder letterpress. Students will design and print their own set of business or greeting cards. The Press at Colorado College, founded by Jim Trissell in 1978, is a letterpress dedicated to the art of making limited edition books and broadsides. Under Trissell’s guidance, The Press became one of the finest letterpresses in the country, producing stunningly beautiful books on a variety of subjects, including one that’s considered one of the most beautiful books ever made. Over the years the Press has published work by some of the best writers in the English language. Students at The Press may learn to design books and broadsides, make polymer plates from photographs, set type, print on the letterpress, and make bindings. Colin Frazer is an educator, printer, and lover of all things wild. He has been a letterpress printer for the last eight years, has exhibited his work regionally and nationally and is an active member of the Rocky Mountain letterpress community. Frazer received a B.A. in physics from Colorado College in 2002. He has worked for Blue Barnhouse letterpress in Asheville, and his work is included in collections at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, the Library of Congress, and the RISD Library. He now serves as the director of The Press at Colorado College. |
