MUMPS ALERT – PLEASE READ! You may have heard on the news that there have been outbreaks of mumps in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Colorado has not had any confirmed cases at this report. Mumps is an acute viral infection that is characterized by muscle aches, loss of appetite, fatigue, headache and fever followed by swelling of the salivary glands on the side of the cheek. Complications can include deafness, testicular inflammation, pancreatitis, and meningitis. Transmission of mumps virus occurs by direct contact with respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing), saliva and contaminated surfaces. The incubation period averages 16 to 18 days from exposure to the start of symptoms. Most individuals who have had two Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccines are believed to be 90% protected, though some cases have occurred in vaccinated individuals. Documentation of two MMR vaccines or a signed a waiver is a requirement of admittance for all Colorado College students. Students that do not have proof of two MMR vaccines or a signed waiver declining the vaccines on file with Boettcher Health Center may be restricted from being on campus during the period when there is potential for the disease to spread. If you have not been vaccinated you might consider becoming vaccinated. MMR vaccines are available at Boettcher Health Center for $5.00. If you have traveled to any of the states listed above and have been exposed to someone who had mumps, or if you are experiencing any symptoms suggestive of mumps, please call Boettcher Health Center for an appointment. Remember to wash your hands often and avoid close contact with individuals who are sick. Additional information can be found at: www.cdc.gov/nip/diseases/mumps/mumps-outbreak.htm.
