- How safe is the campus?
Colorado college is a relatively safe campus which is located in a neighborhood
that borders downtown Colorado Springs. The campus is in an urban setting
and is not secluded. The college has historically been less susceptible
to many violent crimes more prevalent in our principal cities and at larger college. However,
one’s own safety should not be overlooked no matter where you are. We
urge all members of the campus community to take responsibility to assist in
safeguarding our community.
- Where is the security office located?
The security office is located in the center of the student residences, on the
southeast corner of the Edith Gaylord House (1124 N. Cascade). The office
is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- What is the staffing of the security department?
The security department consists of 18 Security Officers which patrol the
campus by foot, in carts and in vehicles. CC security officers are not
police officers and do not have powers of arrest. Four shifts work 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. The Security Department reports to the Vice-President
for Student Life.
- What safety programs and services are available on campus?
Several safety programs and services are available on campus: A “Whistle
Stop” program, “Safe Ride” program, “Self Defense” programs, “Emergency
Call Box” program, “Safety Lighting” program, “Safety
Inspections” program, “VAT Student Contacts” program, “SARC” (Sexual
Assault Response Coordinator), Security/Safety Tips over campus e-mail, Timely
Warnings/Security Alert Notices and Flash Messages, and Residence Hall programs. All
these programs and services are described in the security information handbook
which is disseminated annually to all staff and students.
- What is security’s relationship with the Colorado Springs Police
Department?
Colorado College has formed a cooperative relationship with the Colorado Springs
Police Department. Colorado Springs Police help in patrolling the campus
at those times when there is a higher likelihood of incidents. For instance,
on Friday and Saturday nights, a Colorado Springs Police Officer patrols throughout
the campus and the immediate surrounding neighborhoods.
- What should I do if I see suspicious or dangerous activity?
If you observe suspicious or dangerous activity immediately contact security
at extension 6707 or an emergency call box. Always give your location and
nature of the activity and be prepared to respond to the dispatcher’s questions
or instructions.
- What should I do in case of a campus emergency?
In case of a campus emergency contact security at the emergency number, extension
6911. If an individual requires immediate medical attention or you observe
an actual fire in progress, first contact 911 and then contact campus security.
