COLLEGE ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION
I. Board of Trustees
Colorado College is governed by its Board of Trustees, which consists of not less than fifteen nor more than thirty members, including the President of the College, the President and immediate past President of the National Alumni Council by virtue of their office. At least three members of the Board are designated as "Alumni" Trustees. The other members of the Board (except for those who serve by virtue of their office) are designated as "Charter" Trustees.
Trustees are elected as follows: (1) Charter Trustees are elected by a majority of the Trustees then in office for terms of four years and are eligible for re-election. (2) Alumni Trustees are elected by the alumni at large for non-renewable terms of six years from among those alumni of the College nominated by the National Alumni Council. The Board of Trustees ordinarily meets four times a year, normally in September, December, March, and June. The current officers of the Board of Trustees are the Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary. The Standing Committees of the Board are: Executive Committee, Investment Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Audit Committee, Nominating Committee, Development Committee, Academic Program Committee, and Student Life Committee.
II. The President of the College
As provided in the bylaws of the College: The Board of Trustees appoints the President of the College on such terms, conditions and tenure as it deems to be in the best interest of the College. The President is the Chief Executive Officer and administrative head of the College and, as such, subject to and as directed by the Board, has general authority over and supervision of the operations of all departments of the College, all members of the faculty, all administrative officers and other employees, and all students.
The President exercises and performs such other powers, functions and duties as the Board of Trustees from time to time may direct. Without restriction of or prejudice to the general power and authority conferred upon the President in the bylaws of the College, the President has, and may exercise, the following enumerated powers and functions: (1) The President convenes the faculty at regular dates fixed by him or her and by notice convenes such special meetings of the faculty as he or she may deem necessary. If present, the President presides at all faculty meetings. (2) The President appoints all administrators (with the exception of Administrative Officers who are appointed by the Board upon the recommendation of the President), faculty members, agents and employees of the College, for such terms and upon such conditions as the President may deem to be in the best interests of the College. (3) The President exercises such disciplinary powers as he or she may deem in the best interests of the College. With respect to students, this includes the power to expel or to suspend; with respect to faculty members, (with the sole exception of those holding tenured appointments) it includes the power to dismiss; and with respect to agents and employees (with the exception of Administrative Officers who may only be dismissed by the Board upon the recommendation of the President), it includes the power to dismiss. (4) The President periodically presents to the Board a report on the work, operations and state of the College with such comments and recommendations as he or she deems essential.
III. Office of the Dean
A. Dean of the College/Dean of the Faculty
The Dean of the College/Dean of the Faculty (hereafter "The Dean of the College" or "The Dean") is the officer responsible for the academic program, the curriculum, and the faculty. As chief academic officer, the Dean is second to the President in the line of administrative authority and acts for the President when necessary or desirable. In faculty matters, the Dean is generally responsible for recruitment, hiring, and the equal opportunity program. The Dean makes recommendations to the President regarding appointments, promotions, tenure, salary raises, sabbatical leaves and leaves of absence.
The Dean appoints department chairs after consultation with the Department members and the President. In consultation with Departments and the Faculty Research and Development Board, the Dean has responsibilities for the faculty research and professional development programs. The Dean oversees the curriculum and chairs the Committee on Instruction and sits on other faculty committees. The Dean is the staff officer to the Academic Program Committee of the Board of Trustees.
The following persons report directly to the Dean of the College: the Associate Dean of the College, the Associate Dean of the Faculty, the Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Planning, the Head Librarian, the Dean of the Summer Session, the Director of General Studies, the Registrar, the faculty Director of International Programs, the Director of the Crown-Tapper Teaching and Learning Center and the Director of the Writing Program.
B. Associate Dean of the College The Associate Dean of the College assists the Dean of the College by chairing the Dean's Advisory Committee (DAC), coordinating the Riley Scholars-in-Residence program, and providing oversight for academic advising and other programs relating to the academic success of students and management of space and information technology related to the academic program. In addition, the Associate Dean serves as a liaison to the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) and coordinates the appointment of campus advisors for the off-campus study programs of the ACM.
As chair of the DAC, the Associate Dean reviews student petitions for grade track changes, waivers of rules, and proposals for Liberal Arts & Sciences majors, independently designed thematic minors and student venture grants. The Associate Dean also serves as secretary and ex-officio member of the Committee on Instruction and works with the Registrar=s Office on the annual course schedule and other matters pertaining to student academic progress and enrollment projections, and assists the Dean with faculty recruitment, preparation and analysis of academic budgets, and other projects assigned by the Dean.
C. The Associate Dean of the Faculty The Associate Dean of the Faculty assists the Dean in implementing initiatives regarding the academic program, the curriculum and the faculty. The Associate Dean of the Faculty serves as the Dean's assistant or substitute whenever necessary and fulfills other duties as assigned or requested. The Associate Dean of the Faculty's primary responsibility is to assist and advise the Dean. Among the responsibilities of the Associate Dean of the Faculty are: assisting in curriculum reviews and initiatives, reviewing the Schedule of Courses each year, assisting department chairs in mentoring new faculty and in support of faculty professional development, assisting the Associate Dean of the College and the Faculty Director of the Teaching and learning Center in the integration of information technologies into the classroom, coordinating interdisciplinary and off-campus programs, working with assessment of learning, overseeing the course evaluation program of the College, supervising the annual fellowship meetings, working with fellowship advisors, and serving as advisor to students seeking prestigious fellowships and other competitive awards, working with faculty nominated for prizes, collecting materials and completing submissions to organizing committees, organizing the W.P. Carey Foundation Endowed Lecture and festivities, serving on appropriate committees.
D. Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Planning
The Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Planning assists the Dean by providing administrative support for objective academic assessment activities and performing regular and systematic institutional research which supports the College's goals, planning, policy formation and decision making. Responsibilities include: assisting the Dean, and upon assignment by the Dean, other senior administrators, administrative and academic committees in planning and assessment activities; producing educational and organizational studies, reports and summaries; developing and maintaining a cycle of regular academic assessment studies, reports and databases designed to support decision-making needs of the College; serving as a resource for academic assessment research conducted by academic departments; serving on college committees and other duties as assigned by the by the Dean.
E. Faculty Director of the Crown-Tapper Teaching and Learning Center
The Faculty Director of the Crown-Tapper Teaching and Learning Center is appointed by the President with advice from the Dean of the College and reports to the Dean. The purpose of the Crown-Tapper Teaching and Learning Center is to enhance student learning through the encouragement of better teaching. In the pursuit of that objective the director brings faculty together to talk about pedagogical issues and to interact with visiting specialists; brings students together to talk among themselves and with faculty about effective learning; offers programs for faculty who wish to incorporate new technologies and techniques into their teaching and oversees a pedagogical laboratory, where faculty can work and learn.
IV. Other Administrative Officers
In addition to the Dean of the College, there are four Administrative Officers who are appointed by the Board upon the recommendation of the President. These are the Vice President for Business and Finance/Treasurer, the Vice President for Development, Alumni and College Relations, the Vice President for Student Life and the Legal Counsel/General Secretary.
