Welcome to another year at Colorado College!

…And to another year of academic challenge, friends and fun times, and…innovation! One of Colorado College’s core values states that as members of this campus community, we should strive to “nurture…an ethic of environmental sustainability.” With this in mind, I am pleased to provide this online version of your student guide, The Pathfinder. Although limited printed copies of The Pathfinder are available in the student life office (Armstrong Hall, Suite 100), you will not receive a printed copy in your student mailbox, as in previous years.

I urge you to explore this website which is chock-full of “need-to-know” information for CC students! As you navigate, you will find descriptions of an array of student life resources and opportunities which will complement your academic education. Students who benefit the most from their time here, who are most satisfied, and who learn the most are those who involve themselves in the college’s opportunities, programs, and classes to the fullest extent. I encourage you to become an active member of the Colorado College community, whether that means participating in a familiar activity or trying something new. The menu of choices is wide; you are sure to find something appealing.

The Pathfinder online also outlines the academic and conduct policies of Colorado College, which affect both curricular and extra-curricular activities. These have been developed through careful consideration and in consultation with students, faculty and staff, and trustees. Please familiarize yourself with these policies and consider The Pathfinder online to be your first reference when you have a policy question. If you do not find the answer you seek here on the Web, the student life office and other college offices stand ready to assist you. I will also welcome your critiques and constructive ideas regarding possible policy revisions.

If you are a returning student and have utilized any student services in the past, you might notice that some familiar faces have left our community and some new faces have joined us. One very visible new member of the campus community is associate director for campus safety, Julie Houser. Julie comes to us from Davenport, Iowa where she worked for 15 years at the Davenport Police Department as a detective and as the departmental polygraph examiner. Julie is interested in nature, mountain biking, and hiking. She is excited to move from the public sector into a private, educational setting, especially one where she can spend part of the day on a bike. Look for her riding around campus! You should also know that our college chaplain, Bruce Coriell, is taking a year-long sabbatical. In his absence, Kate Holbrook will very ably guide religious and spiritual activities on campus.

We are very excited to announce that a new car-sharing program, Connect by Hertz, is now available to students, faculty, and staff. Qualified drivers age 18 and older are able to rent an environmentally-friendly vehicle (either a Ford Escape or a Toyota Prius) at a low rate, by the hour or the day. The cars are parked on campus and are accessed by "smart cards." Interested users can register for the program and get more information at www.connectbyhertz.com. Until October 1, 2009, you can register for free with a special promo code which is available through the student life office.

Please note that the Gold Card office is no longer in the basement of Worner Center. It is now located on the second floor of Armstrong Hall, just outside of the student accounts office.

I hope that you will embrace these innovations, as I have, as signs of a vibrant and thriving campus. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your suggestions about how to make the Colorado College community—our community—the best it can be.

Sincerely,

Mike L. Edmonds
Vice President for Student Life/Dean of Students
