Simone Phillips ‘11
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Pikes Peak Region
Summer Fellow
Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?
I was interested in the PIFP fellowship program because I wanted to gain undergraduate experience in the nonprofit sector. Also, I was interested in possibly working in the legal field and with Colorado’s Hispanic population. I thought I may be interested in law school so I was interested in gaining legal experience.
Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization.
I work as a supervisor at the SEPT (supervised exchange parenting time site). Also I enter the notes that volunteers make at the SEPT site, as well as information about new clients in the program. I also have had the opportunity to write a blog for the organization, go to court, and work with the fund development and marketing team.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?
The most interesting/sad thing I have learned is the prominence of child abuse and neglect in our community.
What activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy working on grants, writing the blog, and going to court.
What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
My internship has redirected my interest from law to psychology.
