COLORADO COLLEGE PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Phoebe JiangPhoebe Jiang ‘09
Denver School of Science and Technology
Yearlong Fellow

Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?

The PIFP Fellowship appealed to me because I have long known that I wanted to dedicate my life to service. I feel passionately about the admirable work nonprofits accomplish in the many fields they support, and am therefore enthused to be part of the movement to help solve our nation’s most pressing issues. After I complete my fellowship I hope to apply the skills that I’ve learned to a career serving my fellow man.

Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization:

My primary responsibilities include: assisting the Science and Tech Charter Management Organization in the development and construction of four additional DSST schools; teaching an elective course; and serving as an advisor and mentor to a group of students.

As part of a new team created to manage DSST’s expansion into a network of schools, I will assist in the development of systems across the DSST network to support consistent implementation of network practices in all phases.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?

Since starting my fellowship the amount of knowledge I’ve gained is truly immeasurable, particularly in regards to reforms in education in the United States.

What activities do you enjoy?

Reading , painting (watercolor), cooking, and intellectually-stimulating conversation.

What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?

Considering my current aptitude in English, few people know that I began my academic career without the ability to converse with my teachers and peers. After much dedication, I was able to learn English and eventually gain tremendous appreciation for the written word.
