National Conference of State Legislatures
Health Program
Summer Fellow
Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?
I decided to apply for a PIFP Fellowship because it seemed like the perfect transition from being a student to entering the nonprofit workforce.
Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization:
My responsibilities at the NCSL include responding to information requests concerning health policy from state legislators and their staff, tracking legislation, drafting grant proposals, assisting with meetings, and aiding Health Program staff with various grant-funded projects and publications.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?
Apparently, the NCSL isn’t strictly a nonprofit organization, but rather an “instrumentality” of the states. When it was founded in 1975, it was one of three organizations in the country to fall under this category (the other two were the National Governor’s Association and the Council of State Governments.)
What activities do you enjoy?
Exploring Denver, biking around my new neighborhood, eating at diners.
What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
I went to a high school that once had a graduating class of one; the student body was comprised of 15 students.
