COLORADO COLLEGE PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Julia SickJulia Sick ‘11
ACLU Foundation of Colorado
Summer Fellow

Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?

I am curious about careers in the nonprofit sector, and the PIFP fellowship provides me with the opportunity to learn more about this line of work. Also, I wanted a unique summer experience that would keep me in Colorado and be intellectually engaging.

Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization:

I help out by doing fundraising, planning events, attending events, researching legislation, and various other jobs. A specific project I have been heavily involved in is putting together the Legislative Scorecard, which involves researching constitutionally related state legislation, summarizing the ACLU’s position on such bills, and producing a scorecard of Colorado’s lawmakers and their voting record on civil liberties issues.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?

My host organization has allowed me to see how a nonprofit runs and the work that gets put into making it happen. Also, the ACLU takes on legal cases related to civil liberties violations and follows legislation throughout the congressional session. I am becoming fairly comfortable reading legal documents and legislative bills.

What activities do you enjoy?

I spend my free time rock climbing, listening to music, reading, cooking, and hanging out with friends.

What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?

Reality TV shows are one of my favorite guilty pleasures.
