Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?
The PIFP Fellowship offered me a chance to apply my education and learn about public policy - making in a hands - on way. I wanted to spend the s ummer in a new, challenging environment , working for an organization that can affect real change.
Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization.
I have filled several roles at the NCSL. I have been responsible for replying to information requests from state legislators, their staff, and academics. I have also updated multiple databases of state transportation policy. I have provided research on the overlaps between transportation and global climate change and attended a Transportation Planning, Land Use, and Air Quality Conference to further explore this interaction. This summer I have also been involved in producing published material, culminating in my role as the lead author of a report on major state transportaion legislation in 2009.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?
Learning about the careful balance NCSL has to walk as a bipartisan organization , and insights into the political tension s they have to deal with , has been very interesting.
What activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy reading, especially obsessive reading of political news. I like to cook. This summer I have even gotten into watching the Rockies.
What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
My brother and I are godparents.
