Butterfly Hope
Summer Fellow
Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?
I wanted to do something fun and meaningful with my summer. The fellowships looked like more than a summer job; they looked like life experiences. I have been far from disappointed.
Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization:
I am formally the assistant to the education director at Butterfly Hope, so I am responsible for attendance and other logistics, but I also have had the good fortune to be in the classrooms. One day, I taught the children about tubers, roots, and rhizomes as part of science class, where we made a Chinese salad.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?
Butterfly Hope is a small organization, but the impact they make on the children is profound. BH has been teaching kids the fundamentals of urban gardening for sixteen years, long before it became a trend.
What activities do you enjoy?
I love gardening, the creative side of anything, and working with children.
What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
I am apparently an excellent cook.
