COLORADO COLLEGE PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Joel MinorJoel Minor ‘11
Bell Policy Center
Summer Fellow

Why did you want to become a PIFP Fellow?

The idea of spending my summer doing something challenging and allowing me to use my brain while helping people was very appealing.

Please give a brief description of your job/role in your host organization (include specific projects if you’d like):

  • I am a Policy Analyst fellow, so I get to figure out the exciting mechanics of how stuff works. I am focusing mostly on energy policy, specifically as it applies to the two severance tax initiatives that are going on the ballot in November.
  • I am doing a long-term project analyzing how severance tax rates affect low-income consumers’ energy bills and working with the Smarter Colorado campaign as a consultant researcher.
  • I am tracking the many ballot initiatives and putting together reports on the labor-related ones.
  • I am helping with a technology upgrade at the office.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about your host organization so far?

That in addition to mission-oriented considerations, political and funding considerations can be important in organizational decisions.
